Beneath the daily routine of farming, there’s a growing concern – exposure to herbicides and pesticides is linked to Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological disorder that’s the second most common after Alzheimer’s and the fastest-growing worldwide.

Studies worldwide have shown that chemicals like paraquat, heptachlor, and rotenone – commonly used in agriculture – can increase Parkinson’s risk by up to 200 – 600%, depending on exposure levels. This risk extends beyond farmers to those also living near application areas. 

Hear from Dr Daniel McGowan, CEO of Cure Parkinson’s NZ as he shares practical steps farmers can take, such as using protective gear, opting for safer alternatives, and monitoring symptoms like tremors or loss of smell for early diagnosis.

Meet the presenter:
Daniel McGowan is an experienced company director and executive who is passionately leading the charge as CEO of Cure Parkinson’s NZ whose mission is to raise funds to expedite translational research focused on early diagnosis aimed at slowing or preventing disease progression. Bringing over 25 years of expertise in life sciences and medical communications spanning R&D, innovation, sci/med comms, senior management, and governance – Daniel also serves as a board member at YSAR, training 14-18-year-olds to become active community volunteers in search and rescue and civil defence emergency management. Beyond his professional roles, he’s a dedicated Coastguard Rescue Vessel Master, volunteering in marine search and rescue, showcasing his commitment to community and service
